While I may have some reflux, I don’t believe it is causing what I am feeling. Any insights?

I have an interesting problem that has been going on for almost a year, hopefully you can think of something to help. I feel phlegm sitting in the back of my throat that I can’t swallow. It doesn’t seem to be connected to the seasons, or any food. I went to an ear/nose/throat doctor and had a barium swallow done. The barium swallow showed some reflux, and he was convinced that was the problem. I have tried tums, sleeping with my hear raised….etc.…. While I may believe that I have some reflux, I really don’t believe it is causing what I am feeling. It drives me so crazy sometimes, and I have a hard time falling asleep because I have this feeling and keep swallowing. Nothing seems to make it go away. I have it at all times of the day.  Laying down, sitting up, you name it….  Oh, the doctors said my sinuses are clear…Any insight you might have would be appreciated.

Good to hear from you!  Sorry that you are having the phlegm issue…

It may actually be a response to reflux… but it does sound like something else to me… so the thing to take is an amino acid called NAC… this helps break up the phlegm in the throat and lungs… and I would be aggressive with it for a couple of weeks and see if things improve…

I would use 900mg capsules, and take 2 capsules twice daily on an empty stomach… there are some other benefits to this, as far as liver function…

So I went back on the P5P, only this time it isn’t doing the trick. Any advice?

After being pain-free for over a year, I weaned myself off of P5P several months ago, because I just felt like I was taking SO much stuff (ditto Diaplex.) Then my arms/wrists started aching again. So I went back on the P5P, only this time it isn’t doing the trick. I’m also continuing to take the Whole Mega and Zyflamend, which you’d think would help.

Any advice?

I’m sorry that you are in pain… I’m not sure what is going on, or why getting back on the P5P isn’t helping like it was…

There is another nutrient called Astaxanthin that I have had good success with for small joint issues like this… it is also good for the heart and aging skin, etc…

I would suggest taking 12mg once daily, and give that a bottle (2 months) and see if that is helpful… and continue with the Zyflamend and WholeMega…

I was just reading about CURCUMIN in “Life Extension.” Do you like this one?

I was just reading about CURCUMIN in the June “Life Extension” Magazine.  The article referenced its application to depression and anti-inflammation.

Do you like this one?  Their product is BCM-95?  Have you suggested CURCUMIN to clients?  Do you have any feedback
on it?

I am using glucosamine and condroitin and am wondering if this would be a good option…

I love Curcumin and recommend it very often as an anti-inflammatory… We have used Life Extension’s Super Bio-Curcumin in the past, and would be happy to get that for you…

The product that I use most often is called Zyflammend by New Chapter… this has curcumin as one of the ingredients, along with Ginger and other herbal anti-inflammatories…

And we also have 2 other high-quailty Curcuimn (Turmeric) products…

All of them would go fine with the glucosamine and would be an excellent adjunct to help with joint pain, etc…

I found out I have prostatitis & my doctor has prescribed the antibiotic Cipro for 10 days.  Should I double up on my probiotic?

I found out I have prostatitis & my doctor has prescribed the antibiotic Cipro for 10 days.  Should I double up on my probiotic?

Yes… take the probiotic twice a day… and keep it up for a few weeks, then go back to 1 a day…

I’m looking to switch my doctor, is there someone you could recommend?

I am looking to switch my primary care doctor to someone who I feel is more in line with your approach to care.

Is there someone you could recommend?

I know of some MDs that are holistic, but they do not take insurance, and don’t act as a “Primary Care Physician” per se.

I don’t really know of anyone specific for you… but I would recommend that you “interview” your new MD first, to make sure that this person is willing to honor and respect your sensibilities, come to understand what your health goals are, and then help you attain those goals.

The days of MDs sitting on a pedestal and telling you what to do should be over!

As always, I am available to help you understand how your body works and how best to get it to work differently if that is your desire!

Any suggestions for a possible start of a urinary tract infection?

Any suggestions for a possible start of a urinary tract infection?  Started this a.m. slight but wanted to catch it before weekend.  I’m drinking cranberry juice and water.

The thing in cranberry that is helpful for UTI’s is a sugar called D-Mannose… and the purified sugar is the most effective way to treat and prevent UTI’s naturally… Using a teaspoonful of the powder, or 2 of the capsules, 3 or 4 times a day is usually enough to head off the infection.  I would suggest continuing to do that for a couple of days after the symptoms are gone.

Then I would take a teaspoonful of the powder, or 2 capsules, daily for another week.

If UTI’s are a constant problem, then you can use D-Mannose daily for prevention.  I have a lot of good experience with women no longer getting UTI’s when using it regularly.

As an FYI, the way that D-Mannose works is not by killing any bacteria, it merely acts as a substrate for the bacteria (e.coli) to hold on to, instead of the wall of the bladder, which allows for the body to get rid of it.

The best product to use is by a company called Protocol for Life Balance. We sell a bottle of 90 capsules (500mg) or a tub of powder (85g) for $25.60

Is there something you could recommend for my daughter’s (27) yeast infections?

My daughter (27) has a tendency to get vaginal yeast infections. She has had one now for 4 weeks! She’s eliminated sugar and yeast from her diet. She’s taking a probiotic (over the counter I presume) and has been eating greek yogurt every day. Is there something you could recommend? Her gynecologist is treating her with no success.

So, on the surface, it sounds like she is doing the right things… I’m not crazy about the yogurt… it doesn’t have enough of the good bacteria to make a difference… and often times has too many sugars…

It may be that the probiotic formula that she is using isn’t the strongest or proper mix… sometimes those products don’t have any live bacteria in them once they reach the consumer…

There is a specific formula that we use for just such occasions called “Women’s 50 Billion”, a very specific, very potent, shelf-stable formula… 2 a day of this for a week, then 1 a day for a while should really help clear things up…

What are your thoughts on supplementing with Boron to increase testosterone?

What are your thoughts on supplementing with Boron to increase testosterone?  I’m a 56 year old fit male on a low carb, high fat, cruciferous vegetable lifestyle.

If you recommend boron what dosage do you recommend? Do you recommend a particular brand?

I thoroughly enjoy your site, blogs, and webinars.

Thanks for reaching out and thanks for the kind words about the site.

I just want to clarify something… you said you are on a low carb, high fat… diet. I want to make sure you are not talking about being vegetarian… that you are eating animal proteins…

For the body to make testosterone properly, a few factors need to be in place…

  1. You have to have the proper amino acids to make it. You hear about arginine and ornithine as the most important ones. I am not a fan of taking a supplement for this – I would much rather you make sure you are getting adequate amounts of animal proteins in your diet (probably a minimum of .75 – 1 g of protein per pound of body weight if you want to build) AND the ability to break that protein down properly. This becomes a bigger issue as we age – a decrease in HCl production in our stomach. So I often have people take a plant-based digestive enzyme when they eat – which helps them break the dietary proteins down into the individual amino acids. The formula I use most often is Digestzyme V by OrthoMolecular.
  2. You have to instruct your body to use the amino acids to build (meaning increasing Human Growth Hormone and Testosterone)… and you do that with weight-bearing exercise. When you use your muscles, you create tiny little tears in the muscle cells (microscopic) and the body responds by making the hormones it uses to repair the cells, HGH and Testosterone.
  3. You have to get sleep at the proper time – and that means being asleep between 10pm and 2am… this is the key time that the body does it’s regeneration and repair. And not being asleep during this time makes it harder for your body to make and balance hormones, including HGH and Testosterone.
